PTQ Berlin – Epilogue

So, in case you couldn’t tell from the lack of a post from the fourth round, I scrubbed out at 2-2. In round four I lost again to Faeries. I feel my opponent was an inferior Magic player but I got some bad draws and couldn’t pull it out against double Mistbind Clique.

In retrospect I feel that the Justice Toast deck is very solid all-around but also very slow and clunky. If you can stabilize then you’re going to win. However, a fast deck like Faeries can easily blow you out by turn five while you’re still playing lands that come into play tapped.

Will I still play the deck? Probably not. My two match-wins against Doran and Merfolk were not very convincing. I won both matches 2-1 and really struggled with some of the game wins. Those results added to the Faeries beatings mean I will probably throw my Runed Halos back into my Shadowmoor binder and sleeve up something different for tomorrow night.

What will it be? Well I guess that depends on what Pat Chapin wrote about today. Ha ha. I jest. Seriously.

Tonight is draft but I have to do laundry. I was too lazy yesterday. Boo laundry. My next tournament should be Tuesday night Block Constructed over at Neutral Ground. Maybe I won’t net-deck. Stay tuned to find out.

PTQ Berlin – Round 3

Well I had my ass handed to me by Faeries. A misplayed attack cost me game 1 and double Mistbind Clique won him game two. So now it’s an uphill battle to win the next four rounds.

At least this one was quick so I was able to go grab some breakfast at Statbucks.

2-1 (4-4)

PTQ Berlin – Round 2

Another round that took 50 minutes but I am once again victorious. My opponent playing Merfolk pulled out the win in game one with Sygg but I took the next two easily. On to round 3.

2-0 (4-2)

PTQ Berlin – Round 1

Quick update:

I won round one against Doran with 2 minutes left in the round. I boarded out broken ambitions and cloudthreshers for shriekmaws, runes halos and hallowed burial.

1-0 (2-1)

PTQ Berlin – Prologue

I’ve been pretty busy at work this quarter so this is my first chance to get to a PTQ this season. It’s being held at Fight House in midtown Manhattan. Because of work I haven’t had time to test as much as I wanted so I’ll be playing Pat Chapin’s Justice Toast deck.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the deck it is a four color mid-range control deck with Archon of Justice and Runed Halo. Pat wrote about all this already so I’m not going into details. The real reason I’m playing this is I don’t own Mutavaults and when my gf left me last week she took hers with her. How unfair!

Stay tuned for more after round 1.

So… Eh?

I had to crack three boxes to assemble a playset of uncommons. That’s not a terrible amount. That leaves me three boxes to play with. I will use those to test for limited most likely.

Highlights of my three boxes include 3 Flooded Groves which I needed for constructed and a foil Wake Thrasher. I’ll probably trade the Thrasher for more cards.

I was stuck at work late and missed block night. I will try to get in some MWS testing tonight.

Eventide Case On Its Way

According to StarCity my booster case of Eventide is out for delivery. The usual plan is to crack packs until I have a playset of uncommons and then save the rest to draft.

Tonight is block constructed and I need a few ‘tide cards to play. I’m sure someone can lend them to me. Decklist coming later this afternoon.

Welcome to iGoyf

Welcome to iGoyf, a semi-live Magic the Gathering blog.  Like all aspiring Magic players I realize that writing more about the game will make me a better player.  However, I don’t always have the time to write about my game-play and analyze all my decisions when I get home from a tournament, or the next day.  What to do, what to do?  Then I got a new iPhone and started browsing the applications.  I found the WordPress application and knew what I had to do.

The primary posts from this blog will come from the Magic tournaments I attend live via my iPhone.  This way I can write about an entire tournament over the course of several entries.  A draft night might begin with an entry highlighting the key cards from my pool and my final deck list followed by entries after each round recapping my performance.  Constructed events will begin with the deck list and subsequently include reports from each round.

So there you have it.  Usually I play magic at least once a week at Friday Night Magic (Sealed).  However, I will often play two, three or even more tournaments a week.  In addition I play plenty of magic online including testing of constructed decks on MWS and drafting on MTGO.  Also, I will be happy to post my thoughts when I play pack wars with my girlfriend.  It’s very exciting.
In the next few days I’ll post my first opinions on playing Eventide in limited.  Until then, stay shiny.
